Florida Department of Transportation District One teamed up with Carlson Studio Marketing to engage the public on a new premium transit study known as SMART Connect. SMART Connect, which stands for Sarasota/Manatee Area Regional Transit, is a feasibility study that focuses on transit improvements in the two-county region.
In the initial phase of the study, Carlson Studio Marketing was faced with the task of planning and promoting three stakeholder forums and three public workshops. The stakeholder forums gave elected officials, business leaders and community leaders an overview of the study in a formal presentation, and there was a discussion and Q&A at the end of each presentation.
The public workshops created a more interactive experience. The workshops consisted of eight stations, each with a different activity to tell a story of where people travel for different activities, which roads they use, and their past experience with different transit modes.

Attendees at the public workshops used maps to show where they work, live, shop and play.
